SunPork acquires Little River Pork and Pig Co

Dr Rob van Barneveld, CEO SunPork Group

Effective from March 1 2021, SunPork Group has acquired Little River Pork, located in Bacchus Marsh in Victoria, and as of April 30, Pig Co., also located in Victoria.
Little River Pork currently houses 3200 sows and Pig Co. houses 4300 sows.
This means that SunPork has now become the second largest owner of pigs in Victoria with 7500 sows, after Rivalea also with 7500 sows.
However SunPork overall is the leading operator in the Australian pig industry with 52,000 sows while Rivalea houses above 42000 sows.
When Pork Journal spoke to Dr Rob van Barneveld, Group CEO and Managing Director SunPork Group, earlier in April about the acquisitions, Dr Van Barneveld explained that “SunPork considered that the acquisition of existing facilities offered a faster way of expanding supply than growing the previous facilities organically,” he said
Perhaps anticipating improvements in the domestic market for pork as food serve outlets return to normal and as vaccines roll out and the potential of an expanding population through migration would combine to put pressure on the supply of fresh pork and other pork based products.
